Pendleton
Pendleton is not only one of the most historic towns in the county, but also serves as a historical marker for the entire state of South Carolina. Cherokee Indians inhabited modern day Pendleton long before the Revolutionary War and would eventually lose the land after siding with Great Britain. This region was contained in what was known as Pendleton District in the late 1700's, which now has
several areas of interest included in the National Register of Historic Places. Pendleton District dispersed into what is now known as Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties but the town of Pendleton itself stands as a region of immense tradition and history. Notable sites include the Farmers Society Hall, Ashtabula and Woodburn plantation homes, LaFrance Elementary, Pendleton High School and Hunter's Store, which is home to the Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission.
